On the Film Zero Dark Thirty and Torture Essay Example for Free
On the Film Zero Dark Thirty and Torture Essay Zero Dark Thirty is a 2013 film directed by award-winning director Kathryn Bigelow, and is a narration about the multiple time-skips of how Maya (Jessica Chastain), a new CIA recruit, beat the odds which led to Osama Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s ultimate death. ââ¬Å"Our planeââ¬â¢s been hijacked. I hope I can be able to see your face again, baby. I love you! Goodbye!â⬠were lines from the actual 9/11 audio footage at the beginning of the film and from that, I thought that Zero Dark Thirty would be an emotionally-touching action-packed movie. Because of an exciting plot, I expected it to be a thrilling film but it turned out to be despicably monotonous. Set in the bustling streets and the danger-prone areas of the Middle East, the set design became largely influential to the film, and it added to the viewerââ¬â¢s experience. However, if I hadnââ¬â¢t known that the movie was directed by Academy-Award winner, Kathryn Bigelow, I would have thought that this was directed by an unknown director. The chapter-by-chapter time skip actually took the plot away from the movie it became choppy and incomprehensible. One moment we see Ammar (Reda Kateb) being tortured, and then in the next screen, itââ¬â¢s suddenly two years later. The only commendable action scene in the movie being Osama Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s ambush, the plot seemed to drag as we see more conversations and less action than what we expected to see. The movie poster also said that the writer, Mark Boal, is an Academy award-winning screenwriter but it puzzles me how he actually got the information about the happenings when CIA operations are supposed to be undisclosed. Why would the scriptwriter just name-drop sites that were supposedly top-secret, like the existence of Area 51? Thus, the credibility of the events and places seem questionable. Moreover, the flood of names of terrorists in conversations was actually confusing and the discussions about situations in ISI were unnecessary. I wanted to see scenes related to finding Abu Ahmed and ultimately, Bin Laden. I wanted action, not conversations. Though the pacing was unbelievab ly slow, the cinematography during the bombing in the restaurant Maya and Jennifer were eating at was brilliant. The transition was truly surprising one moment Jennifer was talking to someone over the phone, and then the next, the restaurant was already in pieces and people were dying. Mayaââ¬â¢s expression of pure shock and terror was perfectly captured the camera. The editing of the movie headed by William Goldenberg was realistic, and the bombings were so unpredictable, I was surprised and scared out of my seat. Mostly, the ambush operation in the last 30 minutes of the film was so professionally shot it could pass up as an actual footage. Itââ¬â¢s the little moments that make this film alive. After the phone call from Mayaââ¬â¢s supervisor, stating that tonight will be the ambush, we witness the bonds of the ââ¬Å"canariesâ⬠ââ¬â the way they goofed around and gambled, yet still looked out for each other. Viewers always have the impression that soldiers are brute men who would sacrifice anything and anyone for their purpose, but this scene actually gives the impression t hat theyââ¬â¢re men too who treasure the bonds they have. The only comical relief during the movie was provided by Danââ¬â¢s sarcasm and personality. Ironically, this attitude always comes up during the supposedly-heartbreaking torture scenes which made it particularly hard for me to sympathize with Ammar (Reda Kateb). Another highlight of his role was when Dan fed the monkeys in a CIA site. I remembered the previous scene when Ammar said that Dan was an animal, and as the monkeys stole the ice cream from Dan, I saw how it was similar to their situation. Dan takes and takes from Ammar, but eventually, Ammar gets the best of him when he doesnââ¬â¢t provide information. As I contemplated about the film after watching it, I think the reason why it seemed so bland and dry is because it lacked the action that viewers are used to see in fictional CIA films. The super cool CIA combat and the shooting scenes where the CIA agent never gets shot werenââ¬â¢t present in the movie. Instead, the movie consisted of CIA operatives who commit mistakes and ultimately get killed, like Jennifer (Jennifer Ehle); we meet heartless CIA agents like Dan (Jason Clarke) who would torture a man endlessly to get the information he needs. We see unsexy Maya, an ordinary-looking woman who wears identical suits every day, who got carried away by emotions after Jenniferââ¬â¢s death and during her confrontation with Joseph Bradley (Kyle Chandler), and who was almost killed once in an attempt at her life. The film was made up of one-dimensional characters who got frustrated when they cant do anything. I wanted to know the characters more but there was zero character development. There werent even any scenes about Mayas past, like why and how was she recruited out of high school? Did she ever get in touch with Jennifers family after her death? This lack of character personality development and the blankness of her facial expressions in most of her screen time made me wonder why Jessica Chastain is praised for her role in Zero Dark Thirty. Iââ¬â¢ve recently watched Les Miserables and if Jessica Chastain were to be nominated in the same category as Anne Hathaway for an Oscar, then Chastain could just say that she dreamed a dream of winning an Oscar. I wonââ¬â¢t say that she did not deserve her Golden Globe award, but I never thought sheââ¬â¢d be nominated for it either. Her portrayal as the angry young Bin Laden-obsessed CIA agent was so stereotypical she started as the nervous , awkward new CIA operative and then ultimately became the ââ¬Å"motherfucker,â⬠as she puts it, who found Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s location. Maya always had this expressionless face, as if trying very hard to capture a CIA agentââ¬â¢s demeanor. In fact, I only began to sympathize with Maya upon the death of Jennifer. Her endless pursuit of Bin Laden became more personal from this point, proving that nothing motivates like revenge. I think that the scene where Maya shook her head and then cried actually concludes the plot well because it showed her human side and the drive that has been pushing her all along. She quotes in one scene that her friends got killed because of the hunt and she believes that she has been spared for a reason. This gives justice to her emotions in the end, where she finally breaks down as the realization that she has reached her goal after almost a decade yet the friends she had made along the way were already gone. She is no longer the new, awkward CIA recruit, rather, Maya has become the CIA operative who resorted to all means possible to take down Osama Bin Laden. With the methods that the m ovieââ¬â¢s characters practiced, there has been much speculation whether the film is pro-torture or not. The director and the writer of the film presented these ââ¬Å"enhanced interrogation techniquesâ⬠as a part of the pursuit. So for me, itââ¬â¢s not a pro-torture movie but at the same time, itââ¬â¢s not anti-torture either. If Zero Dark Thirty were pro-torture, then the viewers should have seen how Ammar gave information after being tortured, but he did not. Instead we see that the key piece to the puzzle for finding Bin Laden was actually served to Dan and Maya over lunch, not during torture time. And if the movie were anti-torture, then there shouldnââ¬â¢t have been any torture scenes in the movie leaving Reda Kateb, who played Ammar, with zero talent fee. The film showed that Maya was convinced that the location of Bin Ladenââ¬â¢s courier, Abu Ahmed, is crucial to the pursuit not because there was information revealed during the torture sessions, rather, itââ¬â¢s the detaineesââ¬â¢ refusal to give up any information about the courier that connects the dots for Maya. Therefore, the film depicts numerous, albeit controversial, practices used in Americaââ¬â¢s pursuit for Osama Bin Laden. It shows that torturing Jihad-driven detainees or buying a man a Lamborghini as bribery werenââ¬â¢t the ultimate keys for solving the puzzle that led to Bin Laden. No single method can perfectly encapsulate the sum of the efforts of the people behind the manhunt for Bin Laden. The totality of their hard work and passion was what the filmmakers strived to partake, so for me, the movie isnââ¬â¢t raising any notions on being pro or against these methods. Zero Dark Thirty relays the fact that we tread different paths in life with a great number of sacrifices along the way. Though this movie doesnââ¬â¢t live up to its tagline ââ¬Å"The Greatest Manhunt in History,â⬠is still a perfect example of humanityââ¬â¢s journey towards his goals. Americans would continue to preserve their seat of power, while the Muslims would continue to do anything to reach Jihad. I wanted to be awed by this film and I wanted to feel the characters emotions, but the film gave me neither. The lack of emotion in Zero Dark Thirty makes me think that the budget for this should have been allocated to a film with a different perspective, like a documentary, and not as a film with actors and actresses playing roles they fail to give color to.

Becoming a Schoolteacher Essay examples -- Teaching Education Reflecti
My Views and Goals on Education I have to agree with Socrates when he says that children are born naturally good and society makes them bad. I believe that God gives everyone the same opportunities in life. What you do with the abilities he gives you is your decision. Becoming a schoolteacher to me is the best thing a person can do in life. You have the opportunity to individually help a child broaden their learning skills and help give them a chance at a better life. Discipline is something I feel a teacher should have in the classroom. If there is no control then there is no learning. From the very first day, the teacher should let the students no that she is in charge. Although I donââ¬â¢t feel that you should humiliate a child in front of others, but you should be firm and consistent. I agree with Skinner where he says that reinforcement and punishment are needed in the classroom. He says to reinforce behavior good or bad right after it occurs because the child will forget about it if you try to do it later. If the child was brought up the right way, then they will respect the teacher enough to listen to what they say. As long as the student is respecting you as a teacher, then I feel you should respect them as a student. All children are not the same and should not be treated the same. Some are fast learners and some are not. When you see a child falling behind you should take the time to help. A lot of time gifted students are looked over. Mainly because they may not have the proper testing material in schools. A gifted student may not always be the student who gets an A on ever test. It may be the young child failing every test because the mater... ...n out there who cares for them and cares about what they do. I think by encouraging and praising a child you can get them to accomplish a lot of things. I also think a child should be taught the difference between right and wrong. They donââ¬â¢t know on their own and will never learn if they are not taught. By punishing them or by not letting them participate with the others you can show them when they are doing something they are not a loud to do. The way I look at education is this: life is hard enough with an education. So why try to go through life without one. As a teacher I want to give children an opportunity for an education so they can make something out of themselves. Every little bit helps and puts you one step closer to your goals in life. Everyone has a purpose in life and I feel that my purpose is to be a teacher.

Should a Woman Be More Educated
SHOULD A WOMAN BE MORE EDUCATED THAN A MAN OR SHOULD A MAN BE MORE EDUCATED THAN A WOMAN? August 13, 2012 SHOULD A WOMAN BE MORE EDUCATED THAN A MAN OR SHOULD A MAN BE MORE EDUCATED THAN A WOMAN? Thesis: Education is the key to success and therefore every woman or a man should be equally allowed to be educated if they so desire, the reason is society achieves more with both educated women and men and also educated women can make a family stronger whiles educated men can influence the nation with their leadership skills and enthusiasm.Another reason is that women are like role models in their homes and also in the eyes of their children. Their passion and love they have for their children is so unique that nothing can stop a motherââ¬â¢s love and care for children and society. I. Keeping a girl child in the kitchen as some societies do and some cultures accept is not a better way to raise a great generation, For as the saying goes, educating a woman will help you raise a nation but educating a man will help you give good counsel. II. It is true that men are known as the head of the family yet without an educated woman in the house, the house is always empty.III. Research have proven that at a time when women are consistently outperforming men in college enrollment and completion, women tend to value higher education more highly than men do and believe it has had a more positive impact on their lives, according to the results of a survey that was released in march 2010 by the Pew Research Center. IV. Some part of this world do not agree that a woman should be educated especially where I come from In Africa called Ghana, the belief is that a womanââ¬â¢s place is in the kitchen and the man needs to be more educated but I onââ¬â¢t agree to that and my stand in this argument is that ââ¬Å"The woman should be more educated or equally educated because the pride of a nation is how their women are educated as well as the men. The public seems to be undecided ab out the impact of changes in the gender makeup of the student body. A majority of people surveyed welcomed the fact that more women than men were graduating from college and this makes me happy as woman because society makes us feel like we belong to the kitchen but not to be highly educated in some parts of the world. .Conclusion: I believe that everyone should be given the chance to a higher education regardless of culture traits, country or tribal differences, for when you raise a woman, you have raised a nation, even though men still take their positions in the home as the leaders and the decision makers, without an educated woman, a house will collapse and loose its sense of great direction. Essay about The Assyrian Winged Protective Deity and...
A piece of art can leave distinct impressions with the viewer. The Assyrian Winged Protective Deity provides a plethora of stimulants for the eye. The relief emulates brute strength and power through the overall stature of the figure. The cuneiform writing above the relief greatly influenced the impression a viewer can receive through its narration about the figure. Other than Gilgamesh and the Assyrian Winged Protective Deity both being from Mesopotamia, they have numerous similarities. The Assyrian Winged Protective Deity is a very imposing figure. Other than the influence of divine power, Gilgamesh and the king from the Assyrian Winged Protective Deity have many similarities. The gods give their assistance to the king mentioned in the Assyrian Winged Protective Deity, but they provide Gilgamesh with support as well. Gilgamesh receives dreams from the god Shamash to give him strength during uncertain times, and the relief has wings from the gods to show their influence to protect the king. Both figures represent the lives of kings. However, the king mentioned in the relief is Assyrian, while Gilgamesh is Sumerian, which means these two figures not only came from different

Is It Wrong With Men, Methods, Or Material Essay - 982 Words
Introduction: A wise man once said ââ¬ËEvery accident is a notice that something is wrong with men, methods, or material ââ¬â investigate ââ¬â then actââ¬â¢. (Unknown, Quote Garden, 2016) This was stated in the early 1900, during the industrial era During this period all jobs were factory jobs, which results in plenty of factory accident with machine. Unfortunately, no one reported them or fix them, and of course no inquiry about employee safety. Accidents were accepted as part of the job. Well, time has changed, and now there is a rules, guideline, and provision set up to protect both employees from injury, and business from a lawsuit pertaining to an injury, or a loss in work. This wise man understands the concept of implying critical thinking to a problem. He implies one to acknowledge, investigate and then make a decision. Explanation of the issue or problem The problem at hand is that the company employees are unhappy with the unsafe working conditions. As a result, they have contacted OSHA and leaked information to the local newspaper in regards to their opinion on management ignoring the problems and or sweeping it under the rug. This dispute befalls when a company employee recently injured his hand while pushing a large piece of wood through a table saw. Relating cyberbullying to the Social Dominance Theory, which suggests that hum an societies are predisposed toward arrangements that maintain and perpetuate group-based hierarchical systems of social organization, one can conclude that group settings can have an intense effect on psychological functioning. Social Rank Theory, which argues that aggressive individuals generally hold positions of higher power or status within a group, explains that aggressive behavior and bullying may be reinforced, as it provides those engaging in the behavior with a sense of belonging. So then, peer victimization serves a number of functions, including establishing and maintaining a social hierarchy within a group, and it maintains differences between members that are in the group and not in the group (Cooper Blumenfeld, 2012). Business Research and Communication Immunogold Labeling System
Question: Describe about the Business Research and Communication for Immunogold Labeling System. Answer: Introduction The label against animal testing is necessary because it clearly defines a product and states whether it is or not. Some customer buy goods or services merely because they need it or have seen it being published (Young-Hwan and Byong-Hun, 2001). On the other hands, some customers are so curious about their safety hence judge products based on the labels (Nolan, Kamrath, and Levitt, 2012). For such group of buyers, when label against animal testing is not clear or states otherwise, they dont make any purchase. There are many reasons why customers are so keen on labels against animal testing, the main one being a health risk (VERSTEEG, 2015). Therefore, the label against animal testing influences the consumers behavior of willingness to pay in one way or another. Hypothesis This section of the paper defines three hypothesis statements regarding the research. In the line of business, these hypothesis intends to highlight the importance of animal labeling test, as demonstrated by consumers willingness to pay. They state the effects if animal label testing on the customer sustainability consciousness. Animal labeling assures customers that the product is free from any health risk According to this hypothesis, the product is labeled accordingly by stating the components and ingredients used to prepare the product (SCHADOW, 2009). This specification is important because it makes customers aware of the product in that; if one has an allergy towards the specified ingredients, then he or she will not benefit from the animal product (Soares et al., 2014). At the same time, if the specified ingredients and origin coincide with the customers interns, the buyer will go ahead and buy the product (Marin, 2014). Therefore, the label against animal testing influence the consumers behavior of willingness to pay Animal labeling is important influences customers desire to buy because it enables saving. In details, when products are abled, the client is familiarized with the availed product (Hrinya, 2015). Therefore, when the customer already has the specified product at home or in the store, he or she will not buy the product. At the same time, when the product is missing or has run short, the consumer will be willing to pay for the product. Therefore, the label against animal testing influences the users behavior of willingness to pay. Animal labeling also guides the buyer on how to use the product. About this, when the customer intended to use the product in a given way and the labeling states otherwise, the buyer will not be willing to buy the product. However, if the usage prescription coincides with the customers intentions and capabilities, the latter will be ready to pay (Vlachos, Arvanitoyannis, and Tserkezou, 2016). Therefore, the label against animal testing influence the consumers behavior of willingness to pay Literature review The label against animal testing is widely used in the market today. First, it is the safety and standard regulations of products. Secondly, it is very helpful for the well-informed customers and the business as a whole (IMMUNOGOLD LABELING SYSTEM. 2004). Many concepts are specified while labeling a product. Such factors include ingredients, usage, safety, content, quality, and quantity (West et al., 2014). Apparently, these components of labeling appeal in different ways to various customers. For example, when a given label as indicated specific quantity, only the interested customers will be willing to pay for that particular product. In cases where labeling has specified the ingredients, buyers who are allergic to the given ingredients will not pay for the product. On the other side, the customers who are fit enough to use the product without experiencing any arm will be willing hence, pay. Labeling also defines what a product is (Safety labeling updates and new warnings, 2002). T herefore, the consumer will compare what is being offered and what is already there at the store. Here, the customer will only be willing to pay for the products that are insufficient in his or her store. Lastly, labels also define how a product can be used. Therefore, the customer will only be willing to pay for the products that he knows how to use.
